The Timeless Charm of Gingham
Gingham is a fabric with a rich history, beloved for its classic checked pattern and versatility. Originally woven in Southeast Asia, the word “gingham” is thought to come from the Malay term genggang, meaning “striped.” European traders introduced it to the West in the 17th century, where it quickly gained popularity, particularly in England and later in the United States.
By the 18th century, Manchester, England, became a hub for gingham production, and the pattern evolved from stripes to the familiar checked design we recognise today. Valued for its durability and simplicity, gingham became a staple for everything from clothing to home furnishings.
In the 1950s, gingham took centre stage in fashion, popularised by icons like Brigitte Bardot, who famously wore a pink gingham wedding dress. Since then, it has remained a symbol of nostalgia, and effortless charm.
Today, yellow gingham continues to bring warmth and character to homes, making it the perfect choice for cosy, rustic furnishings. Whether in soft pastels or bold contrasts, this timeless pattern effortlessly blends tradition with modern living.
